The Heavy Hand Write-Up in the Chronicle

Hey, hey, we got some more coverage. This piece was in 96 hours last week and on sfgate.com. Full article after the leap

A noir play set in a bar - what could be more old-school San Francisco? In “The Heavy Hand,” playwright Sean Kelly creates a contemporary whodunit and laces the often humorous plot points with serious themes of dependence and addiction.

“It came out of a one-page playwriting exercise I did a year ago,” Kelly says. The sketch comedy veteran - he was in one of the groups that started the annual San Francisco Sketchfest - says he took the noir form to be able to lighten heavy subjects with snappy dialogue. “It’s a play about dependency and a play about people using dependency … as a way to avoid taking responsibility or growing up.” … <read more of this on sfgate>

SFBG short Review of The Heavy Hand

Tavern, pub, dive — call it what you want, once you are captured within the voracious vortex of your local watering hole, it can be hard to break free. Sean Kelly’s latest play, The Heavy Hand, brings the dive bar dilemma to uncomfortable life. Set almost entirely in shabby Irish establishment Shenanigans, the play reveals the apathetic entrenchment of patrons and proprietors alike being drowned in a tsunami of liquor and thwarted ambition. Beloved teetotaling bartendress Raquel (Eden Nelson) presides over the bar with her “heavy hand” while her sorrowing widower Pop (Jon Fast) gambles their meager profits away in a series of reckless bets. A bevy of bevvied-up regulars (including a wickedly funny Cristina Arriola) exchange banalities and distant dreams, while sex, death, and even rock-and-roll are thrown into the mix for good measure. If you’ve never succumbed to the slow sweet poison of the bar round the way, you might not quite recognize the painful sincerity behind the wistful dialogues about art, love, heartbreak, Japan, and the Bahamas, but as any dive bar connoisseur will tell you, much of it rings all too true. This inaugural production at the spanking-new downtown venue Stage Werx pours neat. (Gluckstern, sfbg.com 2/13/08)
